Oman’s native plants have been used for 5,000 years as food, shelter, medicine, animal fodder, dye and perfume. Each has its own traditions connected with it. Our garden will research these uses and stories of the plants, learning from Omani people and visitors to record the heritage connected with this rich diversity.
The stories will come to life in an exciting and evocative heritage village, where the sights, sounds, and aromas of Omani plant culture (ethnobotany) will excite your senses as soon as you step inside. The hustle and bustle of life in Oman will be re-created using artefacts, practical demonstrations, hands-on activities and live presentation. The village will feature the customs associated with natural products such as frankincense, henna, indigo and rosewater. It will also include many examples of how plants play a role in Omani crafts such as basketry, costume, leatherwork, pottery, weaving and woodwork.
